What is your perception of working for a bank/financial services firm and
does the culture appeal to you?
I feel that the culture in these types of environments is very rigid. Also,
due to the size of many banks and their global reach I also perceive them
to be very hierarchical in structure. As a millennial the culture of banks
and financial services isn’t as appealing as the thought of working for
companies with a more engaging culture such as Google, who I feel are
more open to innovation and change. With that being said, banking is
such a crucial part of society that to be part of a great bank is (in my opinion) a great honour. Furthermore, one of the most appealing parts about
working for a bank is the potential monetary gains available to those who
embark upon this career path.
How much do you know about financial technology firms? Does the idea of
working for a start-up technology company appeal to you?
I am familiar with Deepmind, which began in 2010, and the strides they
are making with artificial intelligence. I also understand that they are
making great progress with self learning AI and building general purpose
learning algorithms. I also have an understanding of blockchain, as a
method of keeping track of transactions, allowing for a useful way of
tracking authorised and unauthorised transactions and its benefits for cyber-security. My understanding of roboadvisors is that it is an alternative
to the traditional method of hiring a financial advisor. The idea of working
for a start-up technology firm is appealing because of the potential rewards that one may be able to gain. It can allow for greater ownership of
the work you contribute towards the company, and should the company
go on to be a major success, then your returns could be massive.
Does a job with a company like Apple, Google or Facebook appeal to you?
Working for a company like Google, Apple or Facebook is appealing
because these are some of the most innovative companies operating in the
world today, with a massive reach continually shaping the world we live
in. To be part of an organisation like that is a very appealing as they have
already impacted my life so greatly, and with how technology continually
changes our lives and the way we work being part of a company like this is
