Jonathan Kellner has witnessed first-hand the evolution of electronic trading. After holding senior trading and technology positions at Charles
Schwab, ITG and Morgan Stanley, he is now CEO of Instinet.
Kellner joined Nomura group in 2003 as managing director for US
equity and global portfolio sales and trading. After the Japanese bank
acquired Instinet in 2006, Kellner moved across to head up its Americas
Since the transition to Instinet, Nomura has shifted all of its electronic
equities execution services to the subsidiary for all regions except Japan.
After becoming a central figure in Instinet’s strategic plans in the US,
Kellner was appointed chief of the agency broker in 2014, replacing Fumiki
Now with the majority of global equities execution conducted on
electronic platforms, Kellner is leading the way into new markets.
After his appointment as CEO, the agency broker connected Nomura’s
advanced electronic futures platform to the Newport execution manage-
ment system (EMS).
The next step for Instinet under Kellner’s leadership is to help the buy-
side adapt to an increasingly automated environment.
“Transparency, which is at the heart of what we do, is key to navigating
this complicated market structure environment,” he said.
“Automation is a major theme this year given the pressure buy-side
trading desks face in their effort to preserve alpha, while continuing to
become more efficient.” n
