During his political career, Markus Ferber has held various posts within the European Parliament, including chairman of the CSU delegation and
co-chairman of the German EPP delegation.
He gained financial and economic experience as a coordinator of the
budget committee, and as a member of the transport and economic and
monetary affairs committees.
“This is why I was elected as 1st vice-chairman of the latter committee,”
“My formal duties sometimes include chairing committee sessions, and
participating in coordinators’ meetings. I am also currently the European
Parliament’s lead negotiator for the recast of the Markets in Financial
Instruments Directive (Mifid II), which is the cornerstone of Europe’s post-
crisis approach to financial markets regulation.”
Ferber – considered one of the most influential European politi-
cians for financial regulation – also serves as chairman of the European
Parliament’s Competition Working Group, which aims to ensure that the
European Parliament’s voice is heard within competition policy.
He says: “The group provides a long-term perspective on how to fur-
ther develop competition policy within Europe.
“With regard to trading, we are currently concluding all the legislative
projects that arose in the aftermath of the financial crisis, and comple-
menting it with the Capital Markets Union. Arguably, Mifid II will fundamen-
tally change the way that financial markets work in Europe.
“Mifid II has certainly been the regulation that has occupied me the
most in recent years, and it will keep doing so, until the legislation is final-
ised. I am also working on the discharge procedure for the three supervi-
sory agencies belonging to the European System of Financial Supervision,
as well as acting as lead negotiator for the European Semester file.” n
