SUMMARY
Christopher McConville has worked at UBS solely since he started his career in financial services.
He joined the investment bank as a graduate – he gained a first class
Masters in Civil Engineering from Newcastle University – before working in
the Information Technology division of the bank.
The 39 year old was born in Sunderland, Tyne & Wear, but today lives
with his wife and three children in Kingston upon Thames.
In 2005 McConville moved over to the front office and, with Owain
Self, played a major role in helping build the algorithmic trading desk in
London.
He was promoted to managing director in 2010. He has previously
stated that this “meant a lot for a boy from a council estate” as it “proved
that hard work and a touch of luck pays off”.
Four years later, he was appointed head of electronic trading for the
EMEA equities business. This entails responsibility for all global clients
who trade into EMEA.
“I love all aspects of technology so when I was asked to join the elec-
tronic trading desk to work in the team that is responsible for technology
and trading, it felt at the time, and still feels, like the perfect role,” he
explains.
His EMEA team consists of sales, sales trading, electronic trading, algo-
rithmic trading, quants, product development and market structure.
As a member of the Cash Execution Committee, McConville is involved
in most projects across the division with a particular focus on UBS’s tech-
nology deliverables.
McConville says the challenge over the next 12 months is to continue
learning and evolving to deliver even greater benefits for the investment
bank’s clients. n
