n THE TRADE HOT 100
With over 35 years’ experience in financial services and a heavy influ- ence in the early days of electronic trading, Alasdair Haynes has
been dubbed the ‘father of crossing in Europe.’
Among his achievements so far was establishing ITG Europe (a combi-
nation of Societe Generale in Europe and US based ITG).
Following this endeavour, Haynes joined Chi-X and again helped to
grow the business into the largest equities platform in Europe before sell-
ing the firm to Bats for $365 million dollars.
After two successful projects, Haynes, along with several staff,
launched Aquis, taking inspiration from the phone industry by introducing
the ‘subscription model’.
“If you look at subscriptions in other industries, telecoms, telephones
and retail, we were talking about how to grow equity markets and quickly
decided that a subscription model was ideal.”
It is this subscription model that Haynes considers one of his finest
achievements particularly given the ‘deep resistance’ he faced when the
model was in its early stages. With such an impressive CV, Haynes retains
a modest demeanor and puts the successful ventures down to the “small
intrinsic teams” with whom he has worked.
What does the future hold?
“My ambition is to change the industry,” he says. “I want to improve
electronic trading so that the end user is getting a better deal with greater
efficiencies in a business.” n
