Paul Russo has dedicated his career to Goldman Sachs, having first
joined the business in 1989 as a summer associate in trading and arbitrage.
Today he is one of the most influential members of the management team,
sitting on the management committee,
securities division executive, risk committee and new activity committee. He
made partner in 2000 and was promoted to managing director two years
prior to that.
After his summer stint as an associate in 1989, Russo rejoined the firm in
1990 to work in the US equities derivatives team and became responsible for
portfolio trading and index volatility.
By 1997, he had moved to Hong
Kong to look after the Asia (ex Japan)
equity derivatives business. In 2000, he
moved up again, becoming co-head of
fixed income currency and commodities
for the Asia region.
Two years later he switched to
London, joining the equities division.
A year after, he was named co-head of
European equity product group trading.
In 2004, he returned to New York to
co-head the global equities derivatives
Before taking up the role he now
commands, he was head of US equities trading and head of global equities
Delta One. n
Global co-chief operating officer,
Steven Maijoor took office as chair- person at the European Securities
and Markets Authority in 2011.
He may have joined on 1 April, but
Maijoor is nobody’s fool.
As the first person to ever take the
role of chairperson, he is now serving
his second five-year term.
Not only does he have full responsibility for the Authority but he also
oversees the ESMA board of supervisors as well as the management
He was previously managing
director of the Dutch financial mar-
kets regulator – The AFM – where he
was responsible for capital market
supervision, including financial report-
ing and auditing, prospectuses, public
offerings, and the supervision of the
integrity of financial markets.
He was previously dean of the
School of Business and Economics at
Maastricht University and has held positions at Maastricht University and the
University of Southern California.
He also holds a PhD in Business
Economics from Maastricht University
and spent time studying at the London
School of Economics. He has a master in Business Economics from the
University of Groningen as well. He is
married and has two daughters and
a son. n
